How to Calculate Fuel Cost
The formula depends on the unit system. In US units, divide the trip distance in miles by fuel economy in miles per gallon, then multiply by the fuel price per gallon.
In Metric units, first calculate the fuel needed in liters: distance in kilometers × fuel consumption in L/100 km ÷ 100. Then multiply the liters needed by the fuel price per liter.

For a 500-mile trip in a vehicle that averages 30 MPG, with fuel priced at $3.50 per gallon:
500 ÷ 30 = 16.67 gallons
16.67 × $3.50 = $58.33
